Established circa 1750, the farm began as a toll station along what is now Ben Venue Road, once a colonial route for transporting goods. Over the centuries, it has been a part of the American heritage from Native American to Colonial settlement and the Civil War. And now, Toll Gate is a vineyard producing estate-grown Virginia wines with heart, heritage, and simplicity.
At Toll Gate, we don’t aim for luxury—we aim for honesty, craftsmanship, and place. Our wines are handcrafted in small batches, made entirely from grapes grown on our own six-acre vineyard. You won’t find foil capsules, overly polished labels, or mass-market distribution here. Instead, you’ll find thoughtfully made wines that reflect the land they come from and the people who tend it. From our award-winning Viognier to our Sparkling Rosé and bold estate red, every bottle tells a story.
We’re a family-owned vineyard making Virginia wine for people who care about where their wine comes from. Our property isn’t open daily, but we host occasional, invitation-only events throughout the year, and we offer wine delivery to selected locations in Virginia with a minimum purchase of one case. We will also work with you to arrange for pick up of any order smaller than one case.
If you’re looking for authentic Virginia wine from a vineyard that’s as rich in stories as it is in soil, we’d love to welcome you to the Toll Gate circle. Sign up for event updates, or explore our current wine offerings to get a taste of something exceptional.
Our label is a nod to the two places we love. The front of the label is a drawing of the original cabin on the property in Flint Hill which made us fall in love with the place on first sight. Reynolds drew the cabin in pencil and ink. We also wanted to incorporate our second love, New Orleans.
Although I am a Virginia girl, and we met at UVA as undergrads, Reynolds is originally from New Orleans. Some of you may recall the horrible Hurricane Katrina which devastated the region in 2005. During the search and rescue missions that ensued, FEMA began to spray paint a large X on each house to convey standard information in each quadrant of the X to all rescuers. This X became known as the Katrina Cross and we have followed in the footsteps of New Orleans artists who redefined the symbol by turning it in to a cultural touchstone of resilience, a strong sense of place, and a determination to battle the odds.
We’ll be honest—we didn’t really expect this.
This year, we entered a few of our wines into the Virginia Governor’s Cup for the first time, mostly out of curiosity. What came back was more than we anticipated: Gold for our 2023 Cabernet Franc, Silver for the 2024 Viognier, and Bronze for the 2024 Rosé.
It felt a bit like showing up quietly and being noticed anyway. These are the same wines we’ve been making here in Flint Hill—nothing dressed up, nothing changed. Just grapes from our vineyard, handled the way we’ve learned over time.
We’re grateful for the recognition, but even more for the people who have been enjoying these wines all along. That part still matters the most.
